A portly middle-ager whose body inflates slightly with each breath. Proudly declares "Continents were once together because Earth used to be smaller! Earth inflates like a balloon!" Was actually a quite rational hypothesis at the time, but retired amicably when plate tectonics was established as the perfect theory. The most peaceful exit among denied hypotheses.
Proposed by Samuel Warren Carey and others. Made unnecessary by the establishment of plate tectonics.
Seafloor surveys established plate tectonics: new crust forms at mid-ocean ridges and old crust subducts at trenches. Continental movement is caused by mantle convection driving crustal plates, not Earth expansion. Continental drift is perfectly explained without changes in Earth's radius.
A fine example of a "hypothesis that was rational at the time" being peacefully replaced by a better theory. Scientific updates aren't always dramatic conflicts—sometimes they're amicable generational transitions.
