膨張地球 エキスパンド

The portly middle-ager who proudly swells, claiming Earth inflates like a balloon

📖 Overview

A portly middle-ager whose body inflates slightly with each breath. Proudly declares "Continents were once together because Earth used to be smaller! Earth inflates like a balloon!" Was actually a quite rational hypothesis at the time, but retired amicably when plate tectonics was established as the perfect theory. The most peaceful exit among denied hypotheses.

🗓 Period of Existence

Proposed19世紀末Debunked1960年代

Proposed by Samuel Warren Carey and others. Made unnecessary by the establishment of plate tectonics.

Debunk Event

Completion of plate tectonics (continental drift theory)

Theoretical Supersession
Key Figuresアルフレッド・ウェゲナー(大陸移動説提唱)ハリー・ヘス(海洋底拡大説)

Scientific Explanation

Seafloor surveys established plate tectonics: new crust forms at mid-ocean ridges and old crust subducts at trenches. Continental movement is caused by mantle convection driving crustal plates, not Earth expansion. Continental drift is perfectly explained without changes in Earth's radius.

💡 Lesson

A fine example of a "hypothesis that was rational at the time" being peacefully replaced by a better theory. Scientific updates aren't always dramatic conflicts—sometimes they're amicable generational transitions.

Iron KuronoEarths Core

Iron is the main component of Earth's core. As the entity who best knows Earth's interior, gently points out the expansion theory's error.

💬 Event Dialogues

Entrance

(Inflating gently) Hey! Continents fit together like a puzzle, right? That's because Earth used to be smaller!

...Plate tectonics? ...Ah, that. My replacement. Good work, that one.

Interactions

Iron

Expand: "Iron! You're Earth's core component! Testify that Earth is expanding!"

Iron: "...Earth's core consists of solid inner core and liquid outer core. No evidence of expansion."

Expand: "But the continents fit like a puzzle..."

Iron: "New crust forms at ridges, old crust subducts at trenches. Mantle convection moves plates. Earth's size hasn't changed."

Expand: "...I see. Good theory. I concede."

Iron: "Your hypothesis was rational for its time. Nothing to be ashamed of."

Expand: "(Smiling) Thanks. Glad I could retire amicably."

Exit

I was wrong. But I exited peacefully. Scientific updates aren't always "battles." When a better answer is found, just smile and yield your seat.

Not every hypothesis exits as a "villain." Some, like me, retire amicably. What matters is the grace to yield your position for the truth.
